Hurricane Season Begins June 1st: Are you prepared?

June 1 marks the start of hurricane season (through November 30), and preparation is essential to protect your home, family, and community.

At The Wright Community Management, we encourage all residents to take proactive steps now by reviewing the attached Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide, which provides comprehensive, trusted guidance for before, during, and after a storm.

Start with a Plan. Preparation begins with a clear hurricane plan. Meet with your household to discuss evacuation routes, shelter options, and communication plans. Determine if you live in an evacuation zone and identify where you will go if an order is issued—staying with family or friends outside the evacuation area is often the best option.

Having supplies ready ahead of time can make a significant difference. Based on Broward County guidance, your emergency kit should include:

  • Bottled water (at least one gallon per person per day for 3–5 days)

  • Non-perishable food

  • Manual (handheld) can opener

  • Flashlights and extra batteries

  • NOAA emergency weather radio or battery-operated radio

  • First aid kit, medications, and personal hygiene items

  • Important documents stored safely

Power outages are common during hurricanes, so ensure you have adequate lighting, backup power sources, and ways to receive emergency updates.

Fuel Up Before the Storm: Do not wait until the last minute to fill your gas tank. As storms approach, gas stations may experience long lines, fuel delivery delays, or temporary closures. Keeping your vehicle fueled ensures you’re ready if evacuation becomes necessary.

Prepare for Power Outages & Heat. Extended outages can lead to extreme indoor heat and limited access to clean water. Stay hydrated, limit refrigerator use, and rely on safe lighting such as flashlights—never candles. If a boil water notice is issued, follow proper safety guidelines before using tap water.

Know When to Evacuate. Evacuations are ordered for those in vulnerable areas such as low-lying zones, mobile homes, or coastal regions. Plan ahead by:

  • Knowing your evacuation zone

  • Identifying multiple evacuation routes

  • Preparing a “go-bag” with essentials

Evacuation Checklist:

  • Identification and insurance documents

  • Medications and medical supplies

  • Clothing and hygiene items

  • Chargers and backup power

  • Water, snacks, and comfort items

  • Supplies for children, elderly family members, and pets

Look Out for One Another. Strong communities are built on care and awareness. If you know of any elderly neighbors or individuals who may not have nearby family or support, take a moment to check on them periodically—especially before and after a storm. A simple check-in can make a meaningful difference.

Stay Informed & Connected. Monitor official updates and emergency alerts. Broward County offers resources such as an emergency hotline (311) and online updates to keep residents informed before, during, and after a storm.

Final Thoughts: Preparation is not about panic—it’s about readiness. Taking the time now to organize supplies, fuel your vehicle, and review your evacuation plan can make all the difference during hurricane season.

We strongly encourage all residents to review the attached Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide in full and keep it accessible throughout the season.

The Wright Community Management remains committed to your safety—stay prepared, stay informed, and stay safe.
